The AFP Ottawa Chapter invites nominations to celebrate individuals, groups and organizations who are making a positive and lasting impact in our communities. We encourage nominations of individuals and groups from equity-deserving communities and those whose contributions may not always be visible or formally recognized.

Important for 2026: All eligible nominees will be publicly listed and may appear in promotional materials.

Important Dates
Nomination Deadline: July 30, 2026, at 5:00 PM
• Nominations received after this deadline will not be considered.
Awards Celebration: November 26, 2026
Location: Horticulture Building
Time: 4:30 PM – 9:30 PM

Before You Submit a Nomination
Please ensure that:
• The nominee has agreed to be nominated.
• The nominee is available to attend the AFP Ottawa Philanthropy Awards on November 26, 2026.
• The nominee agrees to be publicly recognized as a nominee.
• The nominee has reviewed and approved all information included in the nomination package.

Nomination Guidelines
• Nominators may submit multiple nominations.
• Only one (1) nomination per award category may be submitted by a nominator.
• Individuals and organizations that have previously received an AFP Ottawa Philanthropy Award cannot be re-nominated in the same category.
Previous recipients may be nominated in a different category if they meet the award criteria.
• Nominations will be evaluated in accordance with the spirit and principles of the AFP Global Code of Ethical Standards.
• Award decisions will be based solely on the information provided in the nomination forms.

Public Recognition of Nominees
For 2026, AFP Ottawa will publicly recognize all eligible nominees across all award categories.
This approach allows us to celebrate the full breadth of generosity, leadership, and community impact in our sector—not only the award recipients.
• Nominee names may be publicly listed by AFP Ottawa.
• Materials submitted as part of a nomination may be used publicly in relation to the AFP Ottawa Philanthropy Awards.
• Award recipients will be announced during the awards celebration on November 26, 2026.

Please ensure that all submitted materials can be shared publicly.

Awards Selection Committee
• The Awards Selection Committee is composed of:
• Members of the AFP Ottawa Chapter
• Representatives from the Ottawa community
The committee will review all eligible nominations against the established award criteria and select the 2026 Philanthropy Award recipients.

💛 Community Awards

Recognizing the individuals, families, groups and businesses that make outstanding contributions of time, leadership, and funding to countless local charitable organizations in Ottawa.
Award categories include (please click on each category for more details and criteria):

Outstanding Community Heart Award (previously known Outstanding Individual Philanthropist)

This award honours an individual or group (family, or friends) who has demonstrated meaningful and impactful generosity within the community. Their support—financial, volunteer, or through community leadership—has strengthened charitable work and inspired others to give. Nominations will be assessed based on the impact on the organization or community, NOT the size of the gift.
Nominations should address the following criteria:

  • Describe the special qualities (i.e. innovation, creativity, leadership) exhibited by the nominee in the causes supported, including how issues were addressed or solved and/or how the funds were raised.
  • Describe the extent to which the nominee’s generosity, through financial support, volunteerism, leadership, or advocacy, has created meaningful, measurable change in the community or organization. Emphasis is placed on outcomes and consistency of involvement, not the size of the gift.
  • Describe the nominee’s ability to inspire others, strengthen community engagement, and foster a culture of giving, including any ripple effects beyond their own direct contributions.
Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser

This award recognizes a volunteer who has shown exceptional leadership in mobilizing others, coordinating fundraising efforts, or championing a cause. Nominees should demonstrate commitment across one or more organizations, motivation of others, and meaningful community impact.
Nominations should address the following criteria:

  • Description of the nominee’s support of other non-profits where individuals may not have led fundraising efforts, but was active on boards and committees and gave to and volunteered for the organizations
  • For your organization and each organization for which the nominee has helped raise funds, provide description of the leadership role and responsibilities, ability to organize and manage campaigns and groups, funds raised, time, effort and personal financial commitment and impact the nominee and his/her work had on the organization and services
  • Description of both the nominee’s ability to lead, motivate, manage and inspire others, as well as the ability to work within a team
Community Impact Through Business Award

This award honours a locally rooted business whose commitment to community is woven into how it operates and leads. Through charitable giving, employee engagement, creative initiatives, or sustained community partnerships, the business demonstrates that success and generosity can grow together. Open to local businesses of any size, this award celebrates authentic leadership, encouraging others to participate in philanthropy, and meaningful impact in the Ottawa and Area community.
Nominations should address the following criteria:

  • Description of the nominee’s work in encouraging and motivating others (e.g. employees, clients, customers, the public) to get involved with and/or take leadership roles in philanthropy
  • Describe how the business embeds philanthropy and community support into its operations, culture, and decision-making (e.g., giving programs, employee engagement, partnerships, or policies). 
  • Describe the extent to which the business has created meaningful, measurable benefits in the Ottawa and Area community, focusing on outcomes rather than scale of financial contribution 
Outstanding Philanthropic Group or Collective

This award recognizes a group—such as a service club, neighbourhood group, school club, employee team, micro-granting circle, or informal collective—that has come together to create meaningful community impact through giving, fundraising, advocacy, or volunteerism.
Nominations should address the following criteria:

  • Describe the extent to which the group’s combined efforts have created meaningful, measurable change in the community, including who benefited and how outcomes were achieved 
  • Describe how effectively the group works together and mobilizes participation, including member involvement, partnerships, and the ability to bring people together around a shared cause. 
  • Describe the group’s creativity, leadership, and ability to inspire others, through fundraising, advocacy, or volunteerism, and any ripple effects beyond their immediate activities.
Outstanding Youth Philanthropist

This award celebrates an individual or group of young people (up to age 24) who have shown exceptional commitment to their community through fundraising, volunteering, advocacy, or leadership. The award recognizes initiative, creativity, and the positive impact of their contributions.
Nominations should address the following criteria:

  • The nominee’s ability to engage and motivate others—especially peers—to get involved, raise awareness, or contribute to community causes
  • Describe the extent to which the nominee’s efforts have created meaningful, measurable change in their community, including who benefited and what outcomes were achieved. 
  • How the nominee has taken initiative to lead or organize activities (e.g., fundraising, advocacy, or volunteer efforts), showing creativity, ownership, and commitment. 
Outstanding IDEA Inspiration Award

This award recognizes an organization or individual who demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) in philanthropy and fundraising. It celebrates those who champion community-led solutions, promote equity, and foster inclusive environments within the fundraising profession and beyond.
Nominations should address the following criteria:

  • Describe the nominee’s role in fostering inclusive environments and inspiring others in the sector to adopt IDEA-focused approaches, including advocacy, education, or sector-wide influence. 
  • Describe the extent to which the nominee actively advances inclusion, diversity, equity, and access through their practices, policies, or initiatives within philanthropy or fundraising. 
  • Describe how the nominee supports and uplifts community-led solutions, reduces barriers to participation, and creates meaningful, measurable change for equity-deserving groups. 
The Generation Forward Award

This award honours an individual or estate whose charitable gift—planned or realized—reflects a deep commitment to lasting community impact. Recipients share a belief that caring for others extends beyond a lifetime, and that thoughtful planning today can create opportunity, dignity, and support for generations to come. This recognition celebrates foresight, values, and quiet leadership rooted in compassion and local impact.
Nominations should address the following criteria:

  • Describe the extent to which the nominee has demonstrated thoughtful, intentional planning in their charitable giving (e.g., planned gifts, estate gifts), reflecting a long-term commitment to community impact.
  • Describe how the gift—realized or planned—contributes to sustainable, meaningful change, including its potential to support future generations and address ongoing community needs. 
  • Describe how the nominee’s actions reflect compassion, community-minded values, and quiet leadership, including the ways their example may inspire others to consider legacy giving. 

🎓 Professional Awards

Recognizing individual fundraising professionals who work directly for charitable or nonprofit organizations and who are committed to the advancement of philanthropy and the fundraising sector.
Award categories include (please click on each category for more details):

Outstanding Fundraising Professional

The Award for Outstanding Fundraising Professional honours an outstanding individual fundraising professional who works for a nonprofit, charitable organization. Nominees must have a minimum of 15 years of experience as a professional fundraiser. This person is dedicated to serving charitable institutions and is committed to the advancement of philanthropy and the fundraising sector. They must also be a current AFP member.
Nominations should address the following criteria:

  • Career Achievement & Impact
    The nominee’s sustained success over 15+ years in fundraising, including measurable results, innovation in practice, and meaningful contributions to the organizations and communities they have served.   
  • Leadership & Advancement of the Profession
    Describe how the nominee has demonstrated leadership within the sector—through mentoring, volunteering, thought leadership, or involvement in AFP—and contributed to strengthening and advancing the fundraising profession.
  • Ethical Practice & Commitment to Philanthropy
    The extent to which the nominee exemplifies integrity, accountability, and adherence to ethical fundraising standards, while showing a deep, ongoing commitment to philanthropy and charitable work. 
Outstanding Rising Star

This award recognizes an individual who has at least 3 years of experience as a professional fundraiser working directly for a non-profit, charitable organization, and who is a rising star in the field of philanthropy. It aims to recognize the leadership of an individual who brings a breath of fresh air to the community while promoting the values of AFP and who represents the best of the next generation in the profession. Preference is given to current AFP members.
Nominations should address the following criteria:

  • Describe the extent to which the nominee embodies AFP values, demonstrates ethical practice, and invests in their development and the broader fundraising community (e.g., mentorship, involvement, learning).
  • The nominee’s accomplishments within their first 3+ years in fundraising, including measurable results, contributions to campaigns or initiatives, and demonstrated growth in their role. 
  • Describe how the nominee brings fresh ideas, creativity, and initiative to their work, showing leadership potential through new approaches, problem-solving, or influence within their organization or community. 
Power Behind the Purpose Award

This award honours a fundraising professional or team whose leadership strengthens the infrastructure that makes philanthropy possible. Through operational insight, systems thinking, and a commitment to excellence, they power fundraising success. Whether through data integrity, financial stewardship, donor experience, logistics, technology, or administrative leadership, they transform complexity into clarity and strategy into sustainable impact. This award celebrates practitioners whose work is foundational, strategic, and indispensable — creating the conditions for mission-driven fundraising to thrive.
Nominations should address the following criteria:

  • Describe the nominee’s ability to navigate complexity, implement solutions, and demonstrate initiative and leadership (formal or informal) that drives sustainable, organization-wide impact. 
  • Describe the extent to which the nominee strengthens the infrastructure of fundraising through data integrity, processes, technology, financial stewardship, or logistics, improving efficiency, accuracy, and overall effectiveness.  
  • Describe how the nominee’s work translates strategy into action, supporting fundraising outcomes, enhancing donor experience, and enabling teams to perform at a higher level. 
The Creative Catalyst Award

This award recognizes a fundraising campaign that pushes boundaries and redefines what’s possible. It celebrates bold, creative thinking across one or more fundraising channels—such as direct mail, events, digital, peer-to-peer, or integrated approaches—to deliver standout results. These campaigns demonstrate “outside-the-box” ideas, thoughtful risk-taking, and a fresh approach that challenges traditional approaches. Above all, it showcases what can be achieved when great minds, creativity, and strategy come together to inspire donors and drive meaningful impact.
Nominations should address the following criteria:

  • Describe the originality of the campaign’s concept and execution, including how it challenges traditional fundraising approaches and demonstrates bold, “outside-the-box” thinking. 
  • Describe how effectively the campaign aligns creative ideas with clear goals, audience insight, and chosen channels (e.g., digital, events, direct mail), resulting in a well-executed and cohesive initiative.  
  • Describe the campaign’s measurable success and meaningful outcomes, including funds raised, donor engagement, reach, and its overall impact on the organization or community.
