National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This September marks Canada’s second National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

It is an opportunity to recognize and commemorate the intergenerational harm that residential schools have caused to Indigenous families and communities, and to honour those who have been affected by this injustice.

Friday, September 30th also coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which honours the story of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, a former residential school student who had her orange shirt taken away on her first day at residential school.

Whether you will be attending an event or using tomorrow to learn and reflect on your own, consider wearing an orange shirt to help spread awareness.

Reconciliation is a shared responsibility, for a list of activities to further your learning and recognize this day, visit the Government of Canada’s website.

Join us for the 28th Annual AFP Ottawa Philanthropy Awards presented by Foundation WCPD.

This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize and showcase acts of service, hope and commitment happening within our community.

Personal Development Session:  People & Culture – HOw to have constructive conversations & ask those awkward questions.

The sector has seen significant changes.

Many organizations still struggle with how they can address the changing landscape to meet not only funding needs for services, but how they operate overall for staff and those they serve.

The fundraising profession has also changed – from pay equity challenges, workflow and division of duties, to examining human resource policies on how organization serve and protect their staff.

I.D.E.A Spotlight

The month of June is a vibrant and important month to recognize.

It’s National Indigenous History Month, when we honour the rich culture and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

June is also Pride month in Canada, when we celebrate the diversity and accomplishments of 2SLGBTQ+ communities.

Many organizations will embark on trying to do something to recognize one or both of these events.

While some of this could come across as performative, the spirit behind their why and ultimately how they go about this and follow up on that work will be crucial to how it lands.

As part of this months spotlight, we’re highlighting a book called The Witness Blanket by Carey Newman & Kirstie Hudson

The Blanket is a living work of art―a collection of hundreds of objects from those schools. It includes everything from photos, bricks, hockey skates, graduation certificates, dolls and piano keys to braids of hair. Behind every piece is a story.

And behind every story is a residential school Survivor, including Carey’s father. This book is a collection of truths about what happened at those schools, but it’s also a beacon of hope and a step on the journey toward reconciliation.

Are you thinking of getting CFRE Certified?

The AFP CFRE Refresher Course uses case studies to provide a “refresher” of the six fundraising knowledge domains and the core principles and concepts that all experienced fundraising professionals should know.

While the course is designed as a refresher and not an in-depth review, course delivery is flexible so the 2-day option will allow extra time for discussion.

Learning objectives include:

  • Apply fundraising skills and knowledge to real-life scenarios.
  • Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in terms of your understanding of the fundraising knowledge domains.
  • Assess personal readiness to take the CFRE examination.
  • Develop an effective personal study plan.

Giving Guide Spotlight: Are fundraising professionals burnt out or on fire?

BY: Sam Laprade

Are fundraising professionals burnt out or on fire?

BY: Sam Laprade

Are you ready for a truth bomb?

Fundraising professionals were burnt out before the pandemic.

Roles in many non-profit organizations, unfortunately, are inadvertently set up to fail. Lack of resources, small budgets and minimal support are just the tipping point. Then you add unrealistic expectations, lack of professional development opportunities and 60+ hour work weeks. A disaster starts to brew.
Fundraiser after fundraiser is recruited into these roles and yet, board members and the senior leadership team are left scratching their heads.

The turnover for the position is less than two years and they wonder why. If fundraising is really – all about relationships – why are we not putting our efforts into building strong relationships with our fundraising team so they can in turn build long sustaining relationships in the community?

In every training session I conduct with Boards, I repeat the two same messages to participants. Firstly, fundraising is a team sport. Your philanthropy staff are your quarterbacks, sometimes they are running with the ball. Sometimes they toss the ball to a team member who scores the touchdown. They are always inspiring in the huddle through solid acquisition campaigns, renewal mailings, compelling cases of support and solid database management.

Whether it is events, annual giving or major gifts, a solid team is required.
Secondly, I remind Board Members and Executive Directors, that you cannot hire a fundraiser, hand them a computer, show them to a cubicle and hope the money rolls into your organization. You will soon have an empty chair and be on the search for the next fundraiser. And then the next fundraiser.

Let’s skip ahead to mid-March 2020 when many non-profit staff lost countless hours of sleep. In some charities, the demands for their programs doubled overnight and yet their volunteers disappeared due to public health restrictions. On the flip side, in some cases non-profit programs were completely snuffed out altogether and no one was calling them.

Neither group was bragging about sleeping like a baby.

Holiday Message from all of us to all of you!

I.D.E.A Spotlight

As part of this month’s I.D.E.A Spotlight, we’re recommending Collecting Courage: Joy, Pain, Freedom, Love.

“Collecting Courage is a powerful and moving collection of personal experiences written by Black fundraisers that chip away at the idea of an inherent goodness of the charitable sector. […]  These personal testimonies document racism, survival and the preeminence of 14 accomplished Black North American Fundraisers, 5 from the United States and 9 from Canada. This collection of works also speak to the journey of asserting Black identity in all-white work environments. The writers speak of their quest, often thwarted in the charitable sector, to bring to their workplaces the love they have inherited from their struggles to survive in a white dominated society. These brilliant, first-person narratives give voice to a more accurate and complete picture of philanthropy and charity in North America.”

Giving Guide Spotlight: Logan’s Heroes

By Jeff Todd.

Logan Hussein is not someone who takes “no” for an answer.

At birth, on November 26th, 2008, Logan struggled to breathe after being born with pneumothorax – a collapsed lung. But he pulled through, both through his innate determination and the miracle workers at CHEO.

The experience bonded Logan to CHEO for life, whereby he made it his mission to raise funds for the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), so every child will have a fighting chance.

Of course, it stands to reason that a worldwide pandemic wouldn’t get in his way.

“This pandemic has been so hard, on so many people,” Logan says, who has dedicated every single one of his birthdays to raising funds for CHEO, rather than receive gifts. “Obviously, we haven’t been able to get people together the last couple of years. Funny enough, in a way, it has actually brought us closer together.

Giving Guide Spotlight: An undeniable reckoning
By Jeff Todd.

Phyllis Webstad, an Indian Residential School Survivor, lives in a self-described “shack” in Wildwood, a community in northern British Columbia.

“But it’s my shack. If I sold everything I owned, to pay everyone I owe, I would be at zero,” she says.

And yet, her life is beginning to change. On Canada Day, she received a personal phone call from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. They spoke for 23 minutes.

Her husband jokes: “My wife is an example of how you can be famous but not rich.”

Webstad is the founder of the Orange Shirt Society, a national nonprofit dedicated to supporting Indian Residential School Reconciliation. She is also the author of four books, with her latest released earlier this year entitled, “Beyond the Orange Shirt Story”.

On September 30th, Orange Shirt Day encourages people across the country to wear Orange to remember perhaps the greatest atrocity and injustice in Canadian history – a network of mandatory boarding schools for Indigenous peoples, designed to subjugate and assimilate generations of children.

Special thanks to AFP Ottawa Chapter From our ‘NOT Congress’ Bursary Recipients:

This past fall, AFP Ottawa bursary recipients were thrilled with the connections they made at AFP Toronto’s NOT Congress virtual conference.

Many tips and strategies were learned and added in their fundraising tool kits.
Read what these members have to say about their experience:

Sarah McKinnon, Annual Giving Officer, at Carleton University said:
“I am grateful for the bursary received from AFP Ottawa that provided the opportunity to attend AFP Toronto’s NOT Congress this fall.
This is such a great member benefit!
I thought it was important to attend because our world doesn’t look the same as it did a few months ago and I was curious how this translates into our work as fundraisers. Not just with the pandemic, but also with the (long-overdue) social justice movement we’re experiencing. It was helpful to hear that, despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic, donors remain eager to support the causes that matter to them.
They want to hear from us, and we need to keep communicating with them.
While helpful fundraising tips and strategies were gleaned from this conference, the biggest take-away for me personally was to better understand and navigate how to be more inclusive in fundraising efforts and how, as fundraising professionals, we can better practice allyship.”

Alexandra Williams, Fund Development Manager at the Children’s Aid Foundation of Ottawa had this to say:
“Returning from maternity leave during a pandemic is overwhelming to say the least, so receiving the AFP Ottawa Bursary to attend NOT Congress allowed me to have three full days to immerse myself in philanthropy; learning best practices, hearing stories of success and challenges, discovering innovations and reflecting on my personal goals. Honestly, even receiving my conference kit through the mail was thrilling!
As a new CFRE, I am constantly striving to learn and absorb fundraising strategies. My biggest take-away was in digital fundraising. The team at Pathways to Education shared a multitude of tools to create a consistent and personal stewardship plan through technology. I know this will lead to digital transformation at my organization, especially as we learn to connect with our donors throughout the pandemic.
NOT Congress was exactly the content I needed at the right time – which, as a fundraiser I know, is a winning combination!”

Michelle Tribe, Senior Manager: Development, Ottawa Humane Society writes:

“Thank you for awarding me a bursary to attend AFP Toronto’s NOT Congress this fall. It allowed me to network with other fundraising professionals and enabled me to reflect on my goals as a fundraiser, and think about how to engage in my work ethically. With a well-assembled list of speakers, NOT Congress challenged and provided me with a toolkit to reflect on my privilege and work harder towards equality, inclusion and diversity in my workplace. I learned that I won’t be perfect – but I can keep checking in, listening, and continue trying.
While I have worked in fundraising for almost ten years, I’ve been an AFP Ottawa member for less than a year. AFP Ottawa has been a valuable resource to help me be a better fundraiser, despite these challenging times.”

Laura McLean, Development Assistant, Tree Canada appreciates the opportunity and says:

“This is my first year working as a full-time fundraiser, so it was the first time I have been involved with AFP and AFP Congress (or as of this year, Not Congress). I had heard a lot of positive things about the conference from colleagues who had previously attended, but Not Congress blew my expectations away! The platform was very easy and straightforward to use and the three days were jam packed with informative and relevant information. I really enjoyed the speed mentoring session where I was able to connect with experienced fundraisers and ask questions. I took a lot away from this session such as, how to approach donors for gifts to mission, as opposed to program specific, how to tell a heartfelt story and strong messaging to reach donors. The message of making a fundraising ask donor centered also appeared in many other webinars and sessions over the three days. Lynne Wester’s webinar gave great examples of this and I got so many great resources which I’ve been looking into since then. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to attend.”

Submit Your Application for the Alford Group Women’s Mentoring and Leadership Development Program

Applications Due – January 15, 2021
Cohort will be announced by February 28, 2021

AFP membership data and other studies show that female fundraisers represent at least 70 percent of the fundraising profession. Yet, research shows that roughly 70 percent of senior fundraising leadership positions are held by males. Furthermore, most nonprofit boards are comprised of males over the age of 50—a trend that increases as the size of an organization grows.

To address this issue, the IDEA Impact: Alford Group Women’s Mentoring and Leadership Development Program was created to provide support and guidance to women in the profession and to help develop their leadership skills so that they grow and sustain the profession.

WII is committed to equity and encourages applications from all qualified candidates.
Our goal is to attract and develop highly talented women from diverse backgrounds, allowing the program to benefit from a wide variety of experiences and perspectives.

If you are passionate about what you do and would like to share your knowledge and ideas with your philanthropy colleagues, we strongly encourage you to apply!

Fundraising Day 2021 will be an inspiring and engaging opportunity for fundraisers of all career stages, lived experiences and backgrounds to come together virtually to learn, share and network. If you have ideas and unique wisdom to share, whether on fundraising basics or the latest emerging trends and topics, we want to hear from you!

Click here to access the application form.

Extended Application deadline: Sunday, January 3rd, 2021

AFP Ottawa is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and we encourage people from all backgrounds who have interesting and/or fresh content or perspectives to apply. Additionally, we are eager to provide a platform and support for fundraising professionals who are new to speaking at conferences, alongside seasoned presenters.

If you have any questions, please contact Erin Pickering at erinpickering6@gmail.com.

We look forward to hearing from you!

There’s still time to make your 2020 donation!

You might think that just because this year is a bit different that AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Canada is no longer in need of your donation to the Every Member Campaign (EMC), but that is simply not true.

While in-person professional development opportunities across the sector have definitely been effected this year,  AFP continues to offer its National Scholarship Program this year as many events are now virtual and in some cases cheaper, thus being able to offer more scholarships.

Pros and cons!

Applications for scholarships are still being received at the same volume as previous years, the need is still strong in terms of our scholarship funding.  The more money raised the more AFP is able to offer to those that apply.

Some other projects where funding from the EMC will be directed:

-Diversity Scholarship (to attend AFP ICON)
-Mentorship Program
– National Webinar Series
– Research-  à  The Foundation is looking to seek funding to launch the next iteration of the “What Canadian Donors Want” survey and research project.
– Translation
-Diversity and Inclusion programs

Help the Ottawa Chapter reach our 2020 goal and make a gift today!

November 2020 Newsletter

President’s Message.

As we race towards the end of 2020, I want to wish all AFP Ottawa members a happy and healthy, if very different, holiday season ahead. The term “unprecedented”, while yes, overused, does seem to capture this life changing experience we’ve all gone through with the COVID-19 pandemic.

And yet, the strength of our community continues to shine through in new, creative and innovative ways. Our chapter was so honoured to celebrate the 2020 Philanthropy Awards this year, thanks to the support of many supporters and broadcast partner Rogers Cable 22. We were particularly heartened by the stories of incredible giving that came to light through the new category: Award for Outstanding Emergency Response.  And with almost double the nominations this year, submissions to the Phils about incredible givers in our community have never been higher. This tells me that our community is resilient, strong, and supportive and generous.

This week, on December 1, we celebrate GivingTuesday Canada. An opportunity for our community to again show its commitment to a thriving charitable sector. All acts of kindness and generosity ‘count’ when it comes to GivingTuesday, and we invite you, our AFP Ottawa members, to share what your organization is doing to celebrate. Join us online for the fun!

Use the hashtag #GivingTuesday and tag us @AFPOttawa, and we’ll be sure to share your story with a wider audience.

We hope you can join us for some fun and laughs on December 10th as we say farewell to 2020 at the AFP Ottawa Holiday social.  It will be via Zoom this year but will definitely offer the chance for networking & some fun.  I hope to see you there.

With thanks for all that you do,

Teresa Marques
President, AFP Ottawa

If your answer is YES, please take a six-minute confidential survey to share HOW bias, prejudice, and discrimination manifest in your daily work as a fundraiser.
The current civil unrest in our country has drawn attention to systemic racism, along with issues of inequity and inequality, in a profound way.
These issues are ingrained in our society, and they are prevalent in the fundraising profession too.
The purpose of this study is not to identify inequality or inequity but explore HOW it is experienced.

Your experiences, along with others, could significantly expand AFP Global’s understanding of diversity-related issues in our field.

The study has two parts:
  1. Confidential survey seeking demographic data and personal experiences and stories.
  2. A follow-up 20 minute (virtual) interview with survey participants who want to share their stories in further detail.

Please note – This is a confidential survey. Personal information will only be used to gauge the current climate of our profession and to contact respondents for follow up.

Building Courage, Together: How One New Canadian Landed Work She Loves

By Ailsa Ross
September 23, 2020

For Jaipreet Kaur, a new mentoring program in Ottawa has helped her forge her dream career.

Trying to land a career you’re passionate about can be challenging for anyone. But it can be especially difficult if you’re emigrating from northern India to Canada with a science degree, a dream of working in the nonprofit world, and no contacts to help you make that transition.

This is the situation Jaipreet Kaur found herself in two years ago.

From Northern India to Ottawa

Everything was different for Jaipreet when she left her home in India for a work-study program in Ottawa. It wasn’t just the obvious differences: like that Punjabi could no longer be heard on every street, or that the average temperature of her new home went from 24 °C to a frigid 6 °C.

It was also the little things: like how at Algonquin College, where Jaipreet was studying environmental and project management, it was no longer about cramming for an end-of-course exam that counted for 100 per cent of her grade. Now all the coursework she handed in throughout her semester counted for her final mark.

But the hardest part of all about leaving her home in Jalandhar? When you move to a new continent alone, you also leave behind everyone you’ve ever known.

To make the transition easier, Jaipreet initially lived with an Indian family in Ottawa. But that family was not her own. Her family was 6,000 miles away, on the other side of the Atlantic ocean.

Hard Work and Networking

Jaipreet is nothing if not tenacious. Despite her homesickness, she thrived. She worked part-time at a Subway to help pay her bills. She moved into a new place in the city. She looked for any opportunities that might help her transition into her dream career.

While studying at Algonquin, Jaipreet discovered an opportunity called Fundraising Day put on by The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) in Ottawa with support from the RBC Foundation. The AFP created the first fundraising mentorship program in Canada. The event matched 50 young people with 50 industry professionals.

Jaipreet was one of those young people at the inaugural event. For her mentor, she was matched up with Jeff Todd, Director of Communications at The Foundation WCPD, a charitable advisory firm, and a volunteer with the AFP Ottawa Chapter.

Growing from Mentorship

A mentor-mentee relationship isn’t built in a day. Before the pandemic made it necessary to cancel in-person events, Jaipreet had begun shadowing Jeff at philanthropic events to make contacts and build her professional network. When she mentioned she was looking for a summer internship, Jeff knew where she could test her project management skills in the real world: at The Foundation WCPD.

“Despite the situation, we were able to move forward with the program” says Jeff. “We had to pivot, of course. But essentially, all of the protégés now have had access to our virtual networking and training sessions. They have also been given free membership to AFP Ottawa for a full year. We are looking at doing a virtual session specifically geared to young professionals as well this summer.”

The internship at The Foundation grew into an offer of a full-time position for Jaipreet. She continues working with Jeff and the team at The Foundation and hopes to continue her work with the organization in the future. After all, despite all the differences between Ottawa and Jalandhar — and the challenges of staying focused during the pandemic — Jaipreet still says, “Canada is home.”

NEWS AND UPDATES

26th Annual Ottawa Philanthropy Awards
2020 Highlights Unprecedented Philanthropy in our Community

As Co-Chairs of the 2020 AFP Ottawa Philanthropy Awards, also known as the ‘Phils’, we are thrilled to be kicking-off the 2020 edition of the awards. This year marks the 26th year that the Ottawa chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and its volunteers, sponsors, and supporters, have hosted the celebration of philanthropy in Ottawa.

To recognize the unique nature of this year, we have created a one-time award to acknowledge the incredible efforts of our community towards a collective COVID-19 response.

The Emergency Response award, along with the other seven award categories, will be announced the last week of September via livecast, with a special address from our AFP Ottawa Board Chair Teresa Marques, and Title Sponsor the WCPD Foundation.

Traditionally, we honour award recipients at the annual AFP Ottawa Philanthropy Awards Gala in November. As you might expect, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will be unable to gather together this fall to celebrate your accomplishments.

This year, AFP Ottawa will partner with the Ottawa Business Journal (OBJ) and Rogers Communications to promote the 2020 AFP Ottawa Philanthropy Awards recipients through our combined digital and social media channels.

This multi-week marketing campaign will culminate in a live panel discussion in November featuring this year’s recipients, where they will have an opportunity to speak and share their story. We look forward to sharing further details with you in the coming weeks.

The Philanthropy Awards recognize the incredible contribution of philanthropists, volunteers, youth, businesses, and corporate partners, working alongside local charities to help improve our community.  We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, and volunteer committee for their loyal support, time, and talent.

To us, the awards represent the very best of the charitable sector. We invite you to join us as we celebrate service, hope and commitment in this evolving year.

Sincerely,

Jessie-Lee Wallace, CFRE

Summer 2020 Newsletter

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members of AFP,

What a year it’s turned out to be.  These past few months have been beyond challenging in every possible way – personally and professionally, as individuals and as members of our communities, they have also demonstrated that we are resilient. And that we care deeply.  As President of AFP Ottawa, I have been heartened to see the innovation and quick pivoting of so many of our member organizations to respond to the urgencies and new realities presented by COVID-19.  These past few months of crisis and isolation have also been witness to great acts of kindness, generosity, giving, and community, and for this I am deeply greatly to have a ‘first hand seat’ by virtue of working in the charitable sector.

I would like to thank the outgoing directors of the AFP Ottawa Board, welcome the new community leaders who are joining the board and thank those as well who are continuing their mandates this year.  I would also like to thank the hundreds of you who took part in AFP Ottawa’s new online learning webinars, as we shifted to virtual learning and community building during the pandemic. As a chapter, we look forward to finding new ways of reaching you, our members, in the fall with content and learning opportunities that are relevant and that meet your needs.  I hope everyone has a chance to take a break and recharge over these summer months.  Be well and take good care!

Teresa Marques, CFRE
President, AFP Ottawa

Financial Update

The chapter had a very successful year in 2019 which can be attributed to you, the support of our members, as well as a Board that continues to look for innovative ways in providing resources and education opportunities to help you succeed.

We can attribute our good standing financially to the exceptional attendance of Fundraising Day, with the RBC partnership being a great addition. We also had great attendance at the Philanthropy Awards Gala and our Professional Development sessions were very well attended, thanks to a fundraising community thirsty for knowledge.

Thank you for making 2019 a great year for the Ottawa Chapter. For a look at the full audited financial statements from 2019, see this post: https://afpottawa.ca/announcement/materials-for-afp-ottawas-annual-general-meeting/

We’re committed to ending the stigma surrounding mental health. That’s why AFP Global is launching AFP Supports.  The goal is to raise awareness and provide you with the resources needed to learn about and address a critical subject that impacts so many.

There are many issues related to mental health and self-care, and we are just getting started with AFP Supports.

IDEA CORNER

AFP Releases Townhall Recording on Anti-Racism, Inclusion and Fundraising

With the recent deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of police and the protests that have ensued, many are asking what we can do to end racism in America and across the world. On June 15, AFP held a townhall conversation about the actions AFP and fundraisers can take to bring about a more inclusive and just profession and society, hosted by Michelle Edgerton and including Kishshana Palmer, Simone Joyaux, Ken Miller and Marco Corona.

Watch the Townhall recording here: https://afpglobal.org/events/afp-townhall-anti-racism

REFLECTING ON 2020

Stronger Together

We are in the year 2020 and it should have invoked insight,

Instead, now halfway thru, and we find ourselves in a fight,

For health, our life, our community, another way forward,

For what is required from each of us to brave this new world.

Through philanthropy each of us will be able go the distance,

Because empathy and giving back will make the difference,

We will continue to stand strong and believe in what we do,

And make adjustments, no doubt changing our point of view.

And someday, when we look back on these challenging times,

It will be with understanding and appreciation, because sometimes,

We need hardship and struggles to finally see the bigger picture,

To transform the future for the better, in the end be the victors.

– Poem by Andrea Olsen-Black

IDEA CORNER

Free Negotiation Workshops Available

All AFP members now have access to American Association of University Women (AAUW)’s Work Smart Online, a free one-hour digital course, which provides strategies and skills to help individuals learn to better negotiate on behalf of themselves.

The workshop provides negotiating tactics that participants can feel comfortable with and teaches them that negotiation is a conversation, not a confrontation. The skills and knowledge provided in the workshop, while focused on salary and benefit negotiations, will help fundraisers in a variety of conversations—including talking with donors, making “the ask,” and addressing tough topics with colleagues—and will make everyone more aware of the salary gap in the profession.

AFP members will learn to analyze and verbalize their professional worth and accomplishments and develop a value statement that can empower their conversations with others. After completion, nearly half of the participants were able to negotiate for a raise, promotion, or higher-paying job, according to AAUW.

President’s Message

Dear AFP Ottawa members,

To say the past 6 weeks have been challenging would be a massive understatement. Truly, the situation in which we find ourselves as a result of COVID-19 – professionally, personally, physically and emotionally – is unprecedented.  On behalf of the board of AFP Ottawa, I want to thank you, our members, for the work you’re doing every day to help our community make it through this crisis.  So many of you are on the front lines of your organizations, and an equal number I’m sure are working to keep your charity in a position of strength, amid such uncertainty.

While clearly there is much devastation, I’m inspired and heartened by the extraordinary acts of philanthropy and community building that are all around us.  This past March, following the outbreak of pandemic, Canada Helps reported that the number of donors online was actually up 62 per cent over the same month last year, while the number of donations was up 65 per cent. These numbers speak to the generosity of Canadians and our resiliency, despite the severe economic hardship being experienced by millions across Canada.

Here in Ottawa, your AFP Chapter is committed to offering valuable learning opportunities to our members and the broader community, free of charge.  We have been heartened to see such strong and positive engagement, with more than 100 registrants per webinar offered over the past few weeks. We look forward to responding to your feedback on the kinds of learning opportunities which would be most valuable and relevant to you NOW, and we thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

While we regrettably had to cancel Fundraising Day 2020, we’re turning our minds now to the Philanthropy Awards next November, and look forward to being able to celebrate with you all, hopefully in person. We’re excited to be announcing special awards this year focused on the extraordinary ways in which our community has responded to this crisis – more details to come.

In the near term, May 5th will mark #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of giving and unity as an emergency response to COVID-19.  Please check out www.givingtuesday.ca for resources you can access to help bolster giving for your organization, and join the giving conversation online by using the hashtag #GivingTuesdayNow on May 5th.  We know that acts of empathy and giving can inspire as well as offer critical support.  Let’s show the strength of our community here in Ottawa, while we demonstrate the power of giving.

With very best wishes and thanks,

Teresa Marques, CFRE
President, AFP Ottawa

Keeping Your Fundraising Game Strong

It’s no surprise that while the world presses pause in many areas of business and life in general, fundraisers are hard at work ensuring that much needed funds are continuing to be raised for worthy causes.

In an integrated world there is an opportunity to reach your donors in new ways. DonorPerfect reports that a whopping 57% of people who watch fundraising videos will go on to donate to that cause. With stats like that, it’s safe to say that using what little time you have to broadcast your organization’s needs through this crisis is worth the community of support you’ll gain. Perhaps the most relieving part about making a video is that you don’t even have to leave your couch.

January 2020 Newsletter

President’s Message

As we start not only a new year but also a new decade, I’m feeling optimistic and hopeful about what lies ahead for our sector in Ottawa.

For those of you who attended December’s panel discussion on the recent report and recommendations by the Special Senate Committee on the Charitable Sector, you will have heard the enthusiasm, commitment, and willingness to collaborate expressed by many in support of long-term change for the charitable sector. This, together with the work of our AFP Canada leaders and cultivation of the next generation of fundraisers through new programs leaves much to be excited about and grateful for. It was also terrific to end the 2019 with a bit of a breather, through an AFP holiday social in partnership with CAGP – and featuring the comedic talent of Ottawa’s own Sam Laprade!

In this issue, we’re proud to announce the re-launch of our Future Leaders Mentorship Program, in partnership with RBC. I hope you will read more and consider signing up or recommending someone for this year-long program with amazing learning and growth opportunities. We also have some great membership resources and articles which we hope find some use in your everyday work practice.

As we embark on a new year, I want to thank you for your commitment to making our city a better place and for your valued membership with the Association of Fundraising Professionals. I hope to see you soon at AFP’s upcoming learning events!

Teresa Marques
President, AFP Ottawa Chapter

Speed Mentoring Forges New Connections

20 mentors. 20 protégés. 10 minutes… AFP Ottawa’s Speed Mentoring event returned for another year of quick, casual mentorship and knowledge sharing on January 21st at Clocktower Brewpub. Plenty of Fundraisers from across our city came out to listen and learn and form some new connections.

Holiday Social with CAGP a Festive Success

Members from AFP and CAGP’s Ottawa Chapters came together in the spirit of the season on December 10th at Mill Street Brew Pub.

The food was delicious, toasts were given, and Sam Laprade had us all in stitches with her stand-up comedy routine. Check out the full gallery of photos on Facebook.

IDEA CORNER

In 2018, Cause Effective launched a year-long field-learning project to explore questions of racial equity through the lens of the development director.

When asked “why does diversity in fundraising matter?” some respondents said, because: Fundraising is where the narrative of organizations is shaped – development professionals create the language that describes the problems, solutions and visions for change.
